طبقه متوسط ایران به‌شدت تحقیرشده است. برای مثال به روند حجاب اجباری، عملکرد گشت ارشاد، سرکوب جنبش دانشجویی و جنبشس ن و فعالان مدنی توجه کنید. امروز به دلیل فضای خفقتان و فاشیستی، طبقه متوسط نسبت به اصلاح امور تا حدود زیادی ناامید است. 
جمهوری اسلامی از چهل سال پیش تلاش سازماندهی شده‌ای را به کار بست تا هیچ جنبش اجتماعی یا تشکیلات منظم مردمی در کشور شکل نگیرد. دستگاه‌های امنیتی تقریبا همه نهادهای مدنی را یک تهدید به حساب آورده و سرکوب کردند. آنها به‌صورت سیستماتیک راس همه نهادها را زدند و جامعه نهادهای اجتماعی را به جامعه‌ای از نهادهای کوتوله و رهبران کوتوله تبدیل کردند.
